Now Hiring: Executive Director

Executive Director

Innovative, award-winning nonprofit serving the homeless in Walla Walla seeks Executive Director. This is an opportunity to make a real difference in a thriving small town in eastern Washington.  30-40 hours/week, competitive salary and benefits.

Organization Overview:

The Walla Walla Alliance for the Homeless (“the Alliance”) provides homeless people in Walla Walla with access to safe shelter, basic necessities, and the resources needed to transition to stable housing and self-reliance. We were named the Nonprofit of the Year by the Walla Walla Chamber of Commerce in 2019. Our largest project is the Sleep Center, the only low-barrier shelter in the region.  On a typical night about 45 people find respite there.  The Sleep Center was given the Award of Excellence by the Washington Association of Cities in 2017.  Last year we brought social workers on site to assist clients in their transitions to more stable situations.  This has been highly successful.

The Alliance has been mostly staffed by volunteers – over 10,000 hours annually. We are now ready to bring on an Executive Director to manage current operations and help us to continue to evolve in innovative ways. This is an opportunity to join a dynamic group of committed people and help build the organization for the future.

The Walla Walla Valley is a multi-ethnic community of 65,000 with a strong and diversified economy in southeastern Washington.  Unlike larger cities, it is small enough that an individual can actually make a difference.  The Valley is fortunate to have many nonprofits who communicate openly and collaborate with each other to deliver a wide range of services to those in need.

Primary job responsibilities include:

  • Governance: Collaborate with the Board of Directors to fulfill the mission of the organization and ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and mandates.

  • Financial Management: Prepare budgets for approval by the Board; operate within budgets

  • Fundraising: Plan and lead fundraising efforts adequate to support operations. Cultivate donors.

  • Human Resources: Manage staff and coordinate volunteers including recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and retention of qualified staff and volunteers

  • Operations: Direct all operations of the organization

  • Administration:  Develop/maintain policies and procedures, review and approve contracts

  • Public Relations: Serve as spokesperson to Alliance constituents, stakeholders, the media, and the public.  Collaborate with other agencies

Qualifications Desired:

These describe the ideal candidate.  However, we do not expect that any single candidate will possess all of them.  We are interested in the success of the organization and will work to ensure that our new Executive Director will have the support necessary.

  • Education: Bachelor degree in related field

  • Experience: Two or more years of nonprofit leadership

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage a budget of $400,000 or more
